On Friday the 28th of March in Aula Toti, LUSDA had the privilege of hosting H.E. Fredrick L. Mawtang’a as a part of the Meeting with Diplomats series. He also spoke about the strategic importance of Kenyan cultural diplomacy with a focus on increasing tourism and Swahili language programs in universities as it is the most widely spoken non-European language in Africa and an official language of the African Union. Finally, he spoke on the special relationship between Italy and Kenya regarding outer space diplomacy after the reopening of the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Center in Kenya. He noted that a positive effect from its reopening is the creation of a Little Italy in Malindi where “Kenyans live like Italians and Italians live like Kenyans.”
We are sincerely grateful to Ambassador Mawtang’a and Minister Counsellor Edward Mwangi for their presence at our event today.

Gli Stati generali dell’informazione visti da Roma - Tutelare e sviluppare il diritto all’informazione: Un’emergenza per la democrazia
On Thursday the 6th of March a delegation of LUSDA members had the pleasure to be invited once more to the French Embassy at Palazzo Farnese to follow the highly interesting conference “Gli Stati generali dell’informazione visti da Roma - edizione 2. Tutelare e sviluppare il diritto all’informazione: Un’emergenza per la democrazia”.
The talk was opened by the French Ambassador H.E Martin Briens, Bruno Patino (President of Arte) and Alberto Barachini (Italian Undersecretary of State for information and publication). In the panel, several highly distinguished speakers were present:
* Gina Nieri (Institutional Affairs Director, Mediaset)
* Francesco Giorgino (LUISS Professor, Director of Ufficio Studi Rai)
* Enrico Mentana (director of TG La7)
* Stefano De Alessandri (CEO of Ansa).
During the talk, many aspects highlighting the importance of qualitative information through well regulated information channels were discussed. In a time of decentralized information-making through social-media pages, new risks such as the use of AI and the gatekeeping position of new actors arise. While the development of new technology has to be regarded as a neutral fact, the opportunities but also challenges need to be critically observed to protect the transparency and freedom to access qualitative information in modern-time democracies.
After the conference, the ambassador kindly offered refreshments in the unique surroundings of Palazzo Farnese, allowing us to exchange with the speakers and the personnel of the Embassy.

On the security front, we explored Lithuania’s defense enhancements, the importance of NATO support in strengthening the Suwałki Corridor, and the nation’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine. The conversation also touched on trade relations, both across Europe and overseas, as well as Lithuania’s approach to innovation and youth-driven entrepreneurship, particularly in the financial sector. A key takeaway from the meeting was Ambassador Kreivienė’s advice to young people and aspiring diplomats: to read history extensively in order to develop the knowledge and critical thinking necessary to take sides and make responsible decisions in global affairs.
